Pet insurance is generally divided into three main categories based on what they cover:
1. Accident-Only
This is the most basic and affordable option. It strictly covers medical costs resulting from sudden, unexpected physical injuries.
-
Covers: Broken bones, bite wounds, object ingestion, poisoning, and burns.
-
Excludes: All illnesses (cancer, infections), breed-specific conditions, and routine care.
2. Accident & Illness (Comprehensive)
This is the most popular and standard “full coverage” plan. It covers everything in an accident plan plus medical issues that develop over time.
-
Covers: All unexpected injuries, plus illnesses like cancer, allergies, arthritis, digestive issues, and infections.
-
Excludes: Pre-existing conditions (almost universally excluded) and routine exams.
3. Wellness (Preventative)
Often sold as an “add-on” or rider rather than a standalone policy, this helps budget for routine maintenance.
-
Covers: Annual checkups, vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and dental cleanings.
-
Excludes: Any medical treatment for sickness or injury.
